.
OK
.
62 online users on a blog which has 30 to 40 visitors as a daily average indicates that some people actually want to read something here. And I bet this isn't related to my visit at the Halmeonis House or Incheon's Bid for the Asian Games.
.
The classical reaction
.
As always when something terrible happens there was a certain period of time when everbody was shocked. American Blogosphere mourned and didn't even bother about the identity of the murderer.
.
But when the identity of the murderer was made public today - step by step - everybody (except Marmot as always) began shouting at the evil Korean Exchange Student who murdered innocent Americans.
.
This was the one thing most people wanted to hear after a series of killings or attacks by Americans on Koreans in Seoul and elsewhere in Korea. Finally! Don't believe me? Check the comments on Marmot's site which are always a "Slap the Korean" feast.
Can you see the development? At first some calm remarks, when the situation becomes clearer most of them start to bitch and finally when it was disclosed that
.
1. Cho emigrated to the USA at the Age of 3 (= no Korean Society to be blamed)
2. his girlfriend was white (= no korean racism to be applied)
3. another Korean was killed and one was injured (= again, no nationalism, no good and bad)
.
they start to calm down and some people try to defend Korea.
.
It's the same pattern. Always. Those comments at least show that there are dumbasses everywhere in the world. Like these elementary children in Korea who post silly comments on killing white pigs and japanese having fun bitching about inferior Korean devils who have no civilization.
.
My opinion
.
When saw on TV that the murderer was a Korean I was shocked. Deeply shocked.
But even more shocking than the whole incident and the fact that this murderer had a yellow face and a korean passport were - as stated above - the reactions.
.
This was the main cause I wanted so say nothing about this incident and the murderer being Korean. People immediately had their sociologial profile and complete analysis of the incident - me, being a stupid guy, could not write such an analysis with no information about the circumstances.

.
Now that the situation becomes clearer, what can we conlude?
.
Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
.
This was no Korean Shooting, nor an American. German Media wanted to influence it in this direction. Weapons, Bush, Killing 33 persons. Straight line, right?
This is as absurd as blaming Korean Society for one 23-year old who has lived in Korea for about 12% of his life.
.
So what is this massacre?
.
Of course it a tragedy in which a human being killed 32 other human beings, regardless of their nationality, race, ideology, sex or whatever - the two injured/killed Koreans are a proof for this.
.
Humans tend to be extreme, many Koreans tend to be extreme, many Germans tend to be extreme - there were several massacres in the US and in Germany alike.
We can see these reactions in this moment - Koreans with absolutely no relation to the murderer being questioned why "their society" is like that. Koreans being confronted with the fact that "one of them" has killed 32 other people and a smile full of schadenfreude.
.
It's easy to blame one nation, one society. There are factors which make such a tragedy more likely to happen - like easy access to weapons. But using these factors as an excuse or even for an attack on a certain society is just insane. After all this massacre was about a crazy guy who (allegedly) killed his girlfriend and went wild after that.
.
The questions that come to my mind: Why could he again kill two hours later, why wasn't the school evacuated? Are these symptoms of the American Society? No, these were the shortcomings of people who should have reacted properly.
.
It's all about humans, may they be of Korean, Korean-American, American, German or Southwest Timbuktu descent.

sad as it is, as a matter of fact, people always need someone to blame. the americans are now blaming korea, this is bad enough.

but... right after the first lines, when it was not clear to which nationality the murder belongs, korean media was already blaming china for this incident!

so, we are all just human and we all just want to blame someone else -_-

i agree with you. my first reaction to the murderer being korean was "so what?" what bothers me is that at first, when his identity was not known yet, rumors spread that the guy had asian feature - automatically the media spoke of his being chinese. can't people take that guy for what he is in the first place - a human being, an individual? why is it important that he's from south korea? because then the american society, and all the western societies, can't be blamed. it's asia, it's korea, with their rigid confucian societies and what not. it is then only naturally for most koreans to defend themselves - rightly, i think, because as i said before, that guy is first and above all himself and not korea.

I agree the fact he's Korean really has no relevance on what happened, whatsoever. However, I'd just like to point out, as an American G.I., stationed here in Korea, times can be pretty tough for when ONE bad American soldier commits a heinous crime. Honestly, I'm ashamed when it happens. With that being said, I'd like to think the Korea people can gain some perspective that this isn't an American problem, rather, it's a problem for society as a whole. I'm forbidden from Hongdae after a certain hour merely because of what one sick, twisted individual did to an old woman. However, some people in Korea view soldiers as the same entity, whether they be Army, Air Force, Navy, or Marines. And, more importantly, a rather vocal minority makes life tough for people who just want to be regular people wherever they're stationed. I honestly hope people stop pointing their fingers to try finding some "group" to blame. We're all in this together and needlessly blaming our neighbors won't solve any problems.
